through Little America. Before you cross the Lamar River Bridge, a little less than a mile from the bridge, there is a large parking lot on your right. Just head up the trail from there. It's a steep climb to that area of petrified trees. You could also begin at the Specimen Ridge Trail Head in Little America, although that is a longer hike.
