That makes a great difference in your options! Starting from Chicago, you can get to Yellowstone by either the historic Black-and-Yellow Trail or the Yellowstone Trail routes. The B&Y takes you through the Black Hills (cave parks, divert to Devil's Tower) while the YT takes you along the Yellowstone River after the Mississippi and the Missouri (US army forts, battlefields, Pipestone Quarry NPS, possibly the Dakota roadside entertainment along the interstate (skeletons of man walking dinosaur-no charge). If you happen to be interested in General Custer, you can jig between the main lines. The important thing is to keep an eye on the weather and not get caught in the high country by a blizzard or a road closure. Happy travels!
