Day trip from Gardiner to Canyon-Hayden and return saw:

4 (four) elk
1 (one) raven
no wolves within 3 miles, badgers, vols, mice, deer, ducks, coots, dung beetles, ants, squirrels, etc, etc
4 trumpeter swans
500+ languid, hot, tired buffalo none even remotely interested in rut
125,000 people all driving 5 mph
the people
6 people asked at Hayden, "Where are the animals?" 4 of the people them had come from Tetons and saw a paltry number of moose there and nothing else.

Smoke hangs over and throughout the park making scenic photography a day dream. Many trees are turning brown and wilting from lack of water. There will be little fall this year, probably just "drop". Rivers are dry, ponds muddy to caked dry.

Concessions are closing but campgrounds filled. Curious, most of the campers have satellite dishes

Floating island is filling in with grass and could become a meadow within a lifetime.

Oh yes, John's griz reported earlier is out and about.....about 1 mile off the road. The number and size of the campers and their parking etiquette made it very difficult to stop and take out your Hubble for a look-see. One in particular, all black and enough electronic on the roof to be thinly disguised as a Russian fishing trawler we nicknamed Queen Mary. Had a good captain though.

All in all, Yellowstone shows poorly and is nowhere near the glory it once was at this season past years. Perhaps come November......perhaps.
