I have always stayed at The Elk Refuge Inn when in Jackson. It is actually a bit out of town to the north. It has great views of the Refuge and Sleeping Indian Mountain. I also do not have to drive through town to get into Grand Teton Park in the early AM for wildlife viewing.

As others have mentioned, I would call Xanterra and try for some cancellations at park lodging. If it was me (oh how I wish it was me), I would stay at several locations. Possibly Old Faithful, Canyon or Lake, easy access to Hayden Valley AM and PM the Canyon Pack has been visible from Grizzly Overlook. Look for people with spotting scopes. Mammoth is another possibility and I would stay in Silver Gate so that I had at least one morning and one evening opportunity to view wildlife in the NE corner of the park, including Lamar Valley. Silver Gate Cabins has a number of different options available, and may have something open. Have a great time.
