Granite Head's input is accurate. I just wanted to add one relatively inexpensive option, particularly versus purchasing one of those giant long lenses. I once had a Nikkor 500mm F/4 EDIF lens, back in the old film days. That was a $5,000 lens (MSRP), and it still would not do much trying to get decent photos of the action from the Grizzly Overlook or the pullouts near Alum Creek

I have a Nikon DSLR, but my real workhorse, is a Nikon Coolpix P600 or one of its cousins. This series, along with those of Nikon's competitors, like Canon, feature optical zooms that far exceed what you get with the "bazookas", as GraniteHead referred to them. The quality is not going to approach that which you get with the high-priced gear, but you can get better magnification for a whole lot less $$$.
