A bit late, but... Spotting scopes can be attached to DSLR's with inexpensive adapters. It is called digiscoping. You will not have metering or autofocus, but the price and performance is worth a look. I have used it for years. I have a 500/4, but if the scope is already out it is usually quicker to just add the adapter and click the camera into it.
