I know that the latest estimates on they grizzly population range between 600 and above 700. If anyone had a clue on the population size in the 1960s, it would have been the Craighead's.

I was in the park in 1967, and I am not sure that I saw any grizzlies. They rarely approached the roadside the way the black bears did. Many grizzlies relied on the Rabbit Creek or Trout Creek dumps for some of their sustenance, as well as the unfenced dumps in the gateway communities of Cooke City, Gardiner, and West Yellowstone.
