Amber,

If you are up for breaking trail or following bison trails (providing it is newish snow, not the old concrete-like variety), you can go virtually anywhere on the valley floor, subject to the limitations of the Lamar River. The temperatures have been warm enough during the day recently that trying to cross the river would likely be risky. There are still strips of open water in many areas.

If you are up for doing hills and breaking trail, there is excellent exploring to be done on the northwest side of the valley, down below Bison Peak. You can get up on the ridge that separates Lamar Valley and the Slough Creek/Little America area.

If you go to the other end of Lamar Valley and continue a few miles past the confluence of the Lamar River and Soda Butte Creek, there is plenty of flat ground on either side of the road, and Soda Butte Creek is over near the base of Mt. Norris. If you are up for some hill, you can shoe up the Trout Lake trail just beyond the valley. If you go another mile or so, you can snowshoe around the Pebble Creek campground area.

There are lots of good snowshoeing opportunities in the Little America/Slough Creek area, including going out the Slough Creek campground road to the campground or up the trail to First Meadow. You can shoe out to the base of Specimen Ridge, and even head up toward the Fossil Forest if you want some elevation gain. You can go out on the north side of the Northeast Entrance Road and explore the Peregrine Hills or the sprawling area between them and Junction Butte.

If you use the Slough Creek campground road, please stay off the ski track.
