That whole system has been trouble prone from the start. Someone did not think through the fact that the camera and transmitter would be inaccessible for months at a time unless someone wanted to risk life and limb to climb up on the roof of the Inn during the dead of winter and try to work on equipment covered in ice.

Between all of the installation screw-ups and the NPS IT crew at Yellowstone not having experience with the equipment used in the radio link between the Inn and the Ranger Station this is just par for the course.

Of course that lightning strike didn't help things either. When they replaced the camera with an identical model, no one had a record of the settings on the old one.

It's possible that if all of the electronics on the roof of the Inn were not replaced when the camera was replaced we could be experiencing a delayed failure. The camera image has been flaky for the past few weeks before it finally failed.

You would think since Canon's name is all over this that they would insist on an outside firm maintaining the system instead of relying on the stretched-too-thin internal NPS IT people up in Mammoth.

Having installed dome cameras in Colorado, we always checked the internal heater if a customer complained of ice forming on the plastic dome. But I've seen ice on the dome at OF many times. And does the transmitter/controller housing have a heater too? Or is it subject to ambient temperatures that dip well below freezing?

Bring back the lodgepole pine, swaying and all, I say! (And yes, I know that is not going to happen.)
