Granite Head,

We were skiing the Slough Creek campground road yesterday, and came across numerous relatively fresh wolf tracks (probably made in the wee hours or early morning) crossing the trail and headed toward the creek and the area where the traditional Slough Creek den sites have been located. We also saw a number of coyote tracks here and there, also relatively fresh, which is typical of that area. On our way back, in the late afternoon, we spotted some wolves at quite a distance, using binoculars. They were scampering down a ridge in close proximity to the slope by the Horizontal Forest, which had us wondering if they were on a recon mission in preparation for denning season. As we were approaching the hill that would take us back up to the flat in the vicinity of Bob's Knob, we found fresh tracks, including a few that had been imprinted on our earlier ski tracks. Those wolves had to have been heading in the direction of Dave's Hill and the Lamar River Canyon. I'm thinking we are likely to have one or more dens on the hillside where we have frequently seen them over the past 15 or more years.
