Lightning struck for the third time this year, and in all the years since I first visited the park!
Across the Madison River, one pullout to the east from the Mt. Haynes view, was this stray member of the Wapiti Lake Pack.

Note that is the pack I photographed twice this winter, once at Floating Island and once across from Petrified Tree. The Madison River isn't close to either. Evidently at this point the pack had mostly returned to home ground, Hayden, probably because they were ready to whelp. However this gray wolf, and a black wolf that was not with her this day, were being seen occasionally along the Madison River.

That's a real skanky old bison. Story has it, it had died from injuries inflicted by another bison, not a wolf kill. But for 10 days or so, it continued to provide meals for at least the gray and the black, as well as other scavengers in the park.

Best looks I ever got, and am ever likely to get, at a wild wolf, with the river between the photographers one one side, and the wolf on the other.
