...on a day-trip to meet Wendy, Geyser Gary, and his wife Geyser Laurie for dinner, I invested some time looking around Mammoth for the great horned owls that nest there. I knew the owlets were out of the nest, which greatly widens the search "perimeter."

This is thought to be the female of the pair that uses the big old nest, high in a spruce tree, amidst the administrative and staff housing buildings on Officer Row. She was very hard to find; I spotted her from the back, from that angle she looked EXACTLY like a short, fat branch of the cottonwood tree in which she perched. I pointed my camera at her from the opposite side of the tree. She was in shade, probably hoping for a power nap while her fledglings hung out in the next tree over. It looks like her annoyance at having been discovered shows on her face, which is funny, but in fact these birds are very used to the presence of humans. Although she looked pissed she did not change position or location suggesting she wasn't really as put out as she seemed.

Her coloration is paler than "textbook" though color variations are common among owls.
