BP, you are largely correct about the addressing scheme, such as it is. And the roads within each development literally have no names, though they're often referred to by colloquial names. Can you imagine what it is like for a new seasonal LE ranger who has to come in and respond to calls? Keep in mind, most of the buildings do not have their numbers on them as well.

I spent the past two summers doing some project work for the GIS Office, which involved photographing almost 2,000 of the park's 2,200+ buildings. I'm probably one of only a handful of people who can literally tell you where every single building in the park is, what it's used for, etc. :D Anyone know what Building #1 is? lol

As the article mentions, the park is working on a 9-1-1 addressing scheme. It's being made a bit more complicated than it might be in other communities because they're having to decide on legitimate road names for each and every road segment in the park. This is being done by committee (and you know how committees work! lol), and involves even the park historian and the process they go through to name anything officially in the park (that's another committee). Some roads have multiple names that have been used throughout history, so deciding what its official name is going to be involves more than just pulling a name out of a hat. It's quite the interesting process.

All of this is being done in parallel with the construction of a brand new radio system in the park, one that is IP-based. It is supposed to be completed in three years, assuming the funding stream doesn't dry up for it. So both of these projects should come to fruition around the same time.

Regarding the SPOT devices, interestingly I carried one of those this year (and no, I didn't use it to order a pizza :D), as well as a PLB. I had a park radio and kept it on continuously. I don't recall hearing a single callout based on a SPOT device in the south end of the park where I was based. I don't know if they had any up north or in the west, though. But I have heard the stories you mention about people misusing them. I can see how that would be a problem in a park like YNP.
