SY,
I am excited that they are making significant progress on building the database necessary for E/911. Hearing that they are moving toward an IP-radio system is way cool! That will revolutionize public safety communications in the park, particularly for frequent users.
As you are well aware, the combination of hilly terrain and canyon country complicates numerous forms of distance communication. The judicial mandate that resulted from settlement of the PEER lawsuit insures that we will not see a proliferation of antenna towers in Yellowstone, cellular or RF; so anything that creatively enhances the carrying capacity or flexibility of the push-to-talk radio network is a big plus. At least, the buried cable facilities do not intrude on the viewscape the way antenna towers do. Of course, burying cable in Yellowstone is fraught with all sorts of inherent risks. Besides the obvious problem digging anywhere there is hydrothermal activity or a rhyolite boulder field, certain critters like to chew through cable or dig it up.
I'm glad to hear that you didn't pick up any SPOT-related radio traffic off the southern repeaters this summer. I know that a few years ago, Kaelyn was very apprehensive about the negative potential in that technology.
I think I was told once what Building 1 is, but I can't remember what or where it is. Do the remains of the ill-fated public bathworks Norris commissioned out by the Queen's Laundry have a number?
