RandalH is correct. You have to cross private property on this trail at the Gardiner end. A few years permission to cross wasn't being granted. I had heard that the issue was supposed to be resolved before this year but I don't know if that happened. The signs at the Hellroaring T.H. sort of indicate that you can't get to Gardiner. If you are allowed thru, then this is a great hike. It is more arid than most hikes in Yellowstone but I think scenery wise it's still pretty cool. I had my one and only rattlesnake encounter and my closest grizzly encounter on this hike.
