On Monday, we met Steve and Rob in the parking lot (seems to happen a lot, eh?). We all drove to Mammoth Campground so we could get a campsite there. The next few hikes we had planned were closer to that area. We left Rob's car at our site and headed to Hyalite Canyon, over Bozeman way. It was a nice enough day on the nearly 2-hour drive to the trail head.

We had only been hiking about half an hour when it started to rain lightly. No biggie, we stopped and pulled the rain gear out of our packs and packed away the cameras and continued on.

Soon, the light rain turned into a deluge, complete with hail. We hiked on for a bit, thinking it couldn't last long, but it just kept pouring. The trail was turning into a stream. We decided to turn back. Had to pick our way around a couple of rather dicey areas where the water was really running quite deep and fast.

When we got back to the car, we shed the rain gear and headed into Bozeman to REI instead. Picked up a new mid-sized backpack for Steve. I think that was the longest drive we've ever done for such a short hike...but what are ya gonna do about the weather?

I will say that Mort finally retired the cut-off shorts after that one. Thinking it wasn't going to rain very long, he had only put on his rain coat and not his rain pants. Those shorts got soaked and he was one cold puppy by the time we got back to the van.

Headed back to Mammoth and cooked up a big pot of steaming hot chili before Rob had to head back to Canyon.

Steve was finished working for the summer, so he stayed with us.

We did manage a couple photos of one of the falls in the canyon before it started to rain. First one is the falls from the bottom. Not quite as impressive as Union Falls, but still pretty :-)
