We drive a Chevy Express extended length van, converted to 4WD. It took us about 3.5 hours to get to the TH from Canyon. We could have camped closer, but the boys both worked at Canyon and were in the dorms there.
Grassy Lake Rd. gets quite narrow and bumpy the further in you go. We added some new "battle scars" to the sides of the van from the underbrush along the road :-)
I know there are two different places (maybe more?) to begin this hike. We saw one other group of 4 hikers that had started at a point further back on Grassy Lake Rd. Perhaps someone here has better info on where that would be.
I think you'd be okay on Grassy Lake with high clearance without 4WD, we didn't use the 4WD at all. Probably depends on the weather and such.
