We were up a 0-dark-30 on Wed. Aug. 15. Mort and Steve were climbing Middle that day. We've already established that I'm not a climber....so I made other plans. "The boys" checked their packs - putting in lots of food - Mort likes to eat :-) They wanted to get an early start to beat the storms forecast for the afternoon, so we were at the Lupine Meadows trailhead by 4:30 a.m.

They chowed on pre-made wraps we had purchased at Albertson's the day before, filled Nalgenes and hit the trail around 5.

I left them and drove to the Taggart Lake TH. Crawled back in bed in the back of the van, thinking I'd hike to the lake when I woke up. I woke up to an amazing firy red sunrise from all the smoke in the air. Why didn't I take any pics? Who knows? It was early and cold, so I chose to do some critter patrol before a hike. Found one big bull moose in the sage flats near Dornans. The only one I saw for the morning and pretty far away.

Made my way back to Taggart Lake and grabbed the daypack for a hike. A short way up the trail I met a nice man from Mass. who was hiking alone as well. It was his first time in the park and he was a bit nervous about bears so we hiked together to the lake. The smoke was thick and the mountains were under cover. I explained to him that this is one of our favorite hikes for the views of the Tetons. Told him he'd just have to come back again and see for himself :-)

Didn't take any pics on the hike, it was just too smoky. The guy and I parted ways at the lake. I headed to our favorite "snack rock" and relaxed there for a bit, watching a cow moose in a clearing across the lake until she grazed her way into the cover of trees.

Next, I headed to the Laurance Rockefeller Preserve. By the time I got there, I had to wait in line to park. Don't recall that being the case in years past. I made use of the time to grab a snack and do some reading. Waited about half an hour. Grabbed the pack again and hiked up to Phelps Lake. Back at the VC, I spent some time browsing the library and jotted down the titles of some books I'd like to look for.

Next stop, Moose VC, where I spotted this! Is this the next step for us when we eventually retire the van? LOL. Probly needs more windows for me.
