Successful wildlife watching and photography, at least for an opportunist like me (but not like Doug Dance and others who make studied efforts and devote untold calculated hours yielding sensational results) is hit or miss.

For instance, 2012 was The Trip of Bear Dots. I've been lucky several times and have some really nice grizzly photos, especially, to my name, but the closest we got to a bear this year was a big shiny black black bear that ran in about 100 feet front of the car and deep into the woods on the other side of the road in the vicinity of Sylvan Lake, where I've not seen a bear before. Pretty as he was, that bear was too fast for pictures, all the others were too far for pictures. Or the bear jams were such that there was no hope of setting up and doing a good job.

This is a black bear sow who was said to have 2 cubs sleeping on the other side of the log, 100 yards north of Calcite (thanks, Lady Bear, for locating your nap near good off-road parking!). She was mostly snoozing herself, every once in a while she'd look up at the small, ranger-corralled crowd waiting for her or the kids to do something interesting. They never did, at least while we were there.
