I heard from a professor who took a group of students to Yellowstone that they strongly disliked Lake Hotel. He speculates that it's because they're expecting, and longing for, "rustic." Historically Lake Hotel was intended for those who expect and long for the upscale and elegant. I think the new decor accomplishes that.
