The intro on the NPS flyer says:
The trailside museum idea arose from the conviction that a national park is itself a museum. Small building could be located where a natural or historical subject existed and have "exhibits that were only supplementary to the master display lying outside its walls [and understatement if there ever was one]. The first such museums were built in 1924 in Yosemite National Park with funds secured from the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial [there's the Rockefeller generosity again!]. Two other trailside museums, at Bear Mountain, New York, and Arizona's Grand Canyon, soon followed. In 1928, Yellowstone National Park received funds to build a "complete educational unit at Yellowstone" of four trailside museums.
