For anyone planning to visit Pocket Basin/the River Group, or the area on the opposite side of the river, there is now a closure on both riverside trails on either side of the Fountain Flat Freight Road bridge, for the trails that go upriver. It's strange to stand on that bridge, looking upriver, at this time of year, and not see a single fisherman or any other explorers.

This has to be a relatively new development. I watched a group that arrived in a Yellowstone Forever bus walk out there, look at the closure, then turn around and return to the trailhead.

My first thought was that maybe the "ghost" of Hank Heasler was at work, closing off more of Yellowstone's backcountry thermal areas. Then I remembered the recent incident where an employee got burned seriously out there. Perhaps, the NPS attorneys or risk management people dictated the action.

If anyone has inside info on the source of this closure, I would love to read it, before I start a pool where everyone gets to predict which area will be closed next.
