Yellowstone Gateway Museum (Livingston) hosted author Lealey M. Gilmore last week, presenting her new book "Canyon Village in Yellowstone: The Model for Mission 66" (The History Press, Charleston, NC). Softbound, lots of pictures, touches very briefly on the old Canyon Lodge and Hotel, then goes right into the 1950's planning for the general Mission 66 overall plans. Brings to light a cycle of 30's YNP park-wide planning that never got implemented. Integrates the concessionaires and their shares of responsibilities with the Park Service. The floor plans are too small, and there is no information on Canyon "Culture", either the stories of service staff, administration, or the visitors for whom this development was created. However, the selection of colored pictures is excellent, and much more viewable than in the author's power-point presentation. The book closes with a couple of images of the newest visitor's center and one of the new "lodge" lodgings.

The new book does not step on any proposed writings on the Canyon Hotel and other facilities That I can only hope are in the works. There's plenty of room for additional writing on the Canyon area! Reading along in it sent me to Google Earth and the time line pages, because there are places at Canyon, I've never actually found!
