I mis-remembered the price for the reconstruction of Uncle Tom's Trail. This morning I took a few minutes to find my source on Trip Advisor. It is $3.5 to $3.8 million.

The link is to a post from Bill074, an Old Faithful seasonal ranger of many years. His information comes from NPS management and quite reliable. It's an interesting conversation.

The rest of the Canyon trail and overlook reconstruction projects recently completed were equally pricey due to the contractor mobilization costs, site challenges and safety, and employee housing during the very short construction seasons.

I first went down those steps in the late 1950s and in a trip down them in 2014 I remember how many steps were caved in by large rocks hitting them.

YNP has closed many places over the years that I used to visit, and not always because of money. The push to "keep the park as natural as possible" often weighs heavy in these decisions. Sometimes this philosophy goes too far, IMHO.
