June 29th - Saturday

32 degrees in the morning at Silver Gate warming up to 84 degrees. I had two foxes today but never found a wolf. A moose in the evening was seen at the Soda Butte Picnic area. At 4:50 a.m. the two dark grizzlies were digging on Amethyst Bench again this morning. They were separated a little this morning but headed into the woods and out of sight fairly early today. At 10:50 a.m. I found a colorful grizzly digging on the #3 finger on Norris, it was in sight off and on today. Doug M (bear watcher) found the grizzly sow with four cubs of the year early this morning on the last large meadow south of Ski Slope. I did not get there in time to see them. I spent a lot of time throughout the day and evening trying to find them one more time but was not successful. At 5:50 a.m. I found a grizzly sow with two cubs of the year digging on the first large meadow behind Ski Slope. They remained in sight for well over an hour before disappearing over the ridge and out of sight. At 8:00 p.m. Jeff B showed me a small dark grizzly digging on the #4 finger on Norris. At 8:15 p.m. we had a cinnamon black bear grazing in the meadow south of the Soda Butte Picnic Area.

June 30th - Sunday

46 degrees this morning in Silver Gate warming up to a warm 83 degrees. Again, today I had a couple of foxes and a coyote or two, but no wolf was seen today. The Coulter Campground just east of Cooke City is open for the year. At 4:55 a.m. the two dark grizzlies were back again digging on Amethyst Bench. At 7:10 a.m. I found the grizzly sow with two cubs of the year again on the first large meadow behind Ski Slope. At 8:10 a.m. I found the strange family again in the first skyline clearing east of Penny Lane. A grizzly sow with two cubs of the year with a yearling sized grizzly cub digging within a few yards of the sow and cubs of the year. I watched them for fifteen to twenty minutes hoping to see nursing or other activities of them. A gentleman from Utah joined me watching this strange family and he shared pictures and videos of all four together. The interesting point is that this sow was the one, I believe, originally had three cubs of the year but later was seen with only two cubs of the year. I have read that this has been seen before, a sow with different year-old cubs. At 8:50 a.m. I found a small colorful grizzly on the #3 finger on Norris. With the heat this was the only grizzly seen in the middle of the day. At 12:10 p.m. we had a black bear grazing off the road near Pebble Creek Campground.

~ July 2024 ~

July 1st - Monday

My plan was to leave Silver Gate before daylight heading home for summer. But it is difficult passing all those good pullouts in Lamar Valley. It took until 5:10 a.m. to find the two dark grizzlies again digging on Amethyst Bench. It was overcast this morning and took longer to see the grizzlies. At 6:05 a.m. I found the grizzly sow with two cubs of the year again on the first large meadow/ridge south of Ski Slope. They were only in sight for ten minutes or so before moving over the ridge and out of sight. I had a pleasant trip back to Idaho Falls with all the traffic entering the park but little traffic going my way leaving the park. I hope to come back in mid to late September.
