Back in my long distance running days whenever I wasn't happy with a race I would remember what someone told me. Most people can't run around the block so don't be too upset if you run a couple minutes slower than you want. This translates to hiking too. There aren't a lot of people tackling these tough uphill hikes; give yourself credit for what you did accomplish.
Don't underestimate what the smoke might have been doing to you. I had more difficulty in 2012 than I can ever remember. I struggled on Sepulchre and on a hike we did to Union Falls. I think the smoke was a factor. Of course in my case the fact that I've gained a bunch of weight might have been a factor also.
