"Those who have packed far up into grizzly country know that the presence of even one grizzly on the land elevates the mountains, deepens the canyons, chills the winds, brightens the stars, darkens the forest, and quickens the pulse of all who enter it. They know that when a bear dies, something sacred in every living thing interconnected with that realm also dies."
- John Murray, The Great Bear: Contemporary Writings on the Grizzly

This is grizzly bear sow 399 and her four yearling cubs (born in winter 2020) on their home ground, Grand Teton National Park. The youngsters are feeding on an elk calf they caught and killed (with their mother's help) while she abstains. Instead of eating, she remained on high alert, deeply understanding that young bears focused only on their meal (as meager as a single elk calf for 4 or 5 thin bears may be) are extremely vulnerable to aggression by another, likely male, bear. All was well, and the four little bears, who are quite thin, took in just a few more badly-needed calories.

Note from the peek at 399's breast (one of six total), she's still nursing the littles. Meaning, she also really needs to get some calories of her own.

I might add, we need not pack far up into grizzly country to be electrified by a sight like this.
