Per the flyer supplied by the interp ranger at Norris:

Norris Geyser Basin Trailside Museum - 1930
In the valley of the Gibbon River lies Yellowstone's most dynamic thermal area, the Norris Geyser Basin. The Norris Museum sits on a hill overlooking the area's thermal features and frames a commanding view of the Gallatin Range. Designed as a gateway leading to the mysterious world of the geyser basin, this one-story building is both dramatic and imposing. Visitors arrive through the central portion--an open-air foyer covered by a massive clipped-gable roof. From the foyer they catch their first glimpses of the geyser basin beyond, accessible via a flagstone terrace and stone steps. The walls are made of huge, irregular boulders and emphasized by extreme batters. Log purlins and brackets are exposed at the gable ends. Above the stone, the wall is wood shingled, as is the roof."
