I despise the new visitor centers at Old Faithful and especially at Canyon. I let my membership in the Yellowstone Association expire for a few years as my own sort of protest for their involvement in creating these gaudy monstrosities. I was not opposed to building new centers, I realize they were sorely needed but did they really have to build such obscenely large structures that dominate the landscape rather than blend in. In my opinion it is horrible to come over Blanding Hill and see nothing but the Canyon VC sticking out above the trees or to look towards Old Faithful from Geyser Hill and see the VEC dominating the landscape. Apparently the person or persons designing the visitor centers aren t onboard with Robert Reamers philosophy of having the building blend with the landscape.
Standing on their own I agree that they are attractive buildings. They would be wonderful in an urban setting, but not where they sit now. They are just too large and dominate the view for my taste, I wish they had been less imposing structures.
In June of this year, I did finally renew my membership in the Yellowstone Association. I was at the Canyon VC and the cashier at the YA store was promoting being a member. She used the new VC s as some of the good work that YA does in the park. We had a spirited but friendly debate on the merits of the buildings and afterwards I rejoined the Yellowstone Association. Hey, I got a 20% discount on any purchase which I used on the new Yellowstone Atlas. I can live with my own hypocrisy. :-)
