Wolf-watching was a little sparse on this trip, though we saw a lone black heading south in Little America, and another lone black crossed in front of our car after dark (such as it is at 9:30 at night in Yellowstone in mid-June) near Alum Creek. The next day there was a big crowd with lots of big glass in a high overlook on the east side of the road just a little farther south; in the great distance we could just barely see a couple of grays in the deep sage. Rick McIntyre was set up there; I think this is the first time I've seen him outside the northern range. Old Loon friends Becky and Chloe were set up there as well - for those of you who haven't seen them in a long time, they're doing fine! I spoke a little with Rick, he was clear that he needed to "catch up" on what was going on with the Canyons, the active pack in Hayden now.
He was accompanied by Ranger Ken Conway with demo wolf parts. Seems like a good idea to have a second interp along so Rick can focus a little more on observing while the other person answers questions. Though as someone pointed out, first the skull he had in hand was a bear, not a wolf. Oops.
