Hi Christi - Others can discuss your travel questions. I did go through the Junior Ranger years with my daughter and all of her friends, more than once.

For the Jr Ranger, go ahead and pick up the newspaper, it will be you who will be guiding him through it, and if he has trouble finishing it, it's still worth having the puzzles and tasks along with you in the car, even if he doesn't finish it. Don't pressure him into the final goal, just say it's a fun thing that some kids do.

When it's time to see a Ranger to sign off on the paper, find a less crowded VC where the ranger can really spend time talking it over with him. I recently observed Nick at Norris going through the paper with a young man and his attention, patience, guided questions and his final congratulatory remarks made me tear up a little, it was awesome!!

In the bigger Visitor Centers, they do sometimes announce it and get a round of applause from the crowd, but it may work better for you to find a less busy location... you and Art can give the thunderous applause!
