Since all the kids had Sunday off, we planned a longer hike. Carolyn stayed in the dorms with Steve and Rob Sat. night so she wouldn't have to drive all the way in from Gardiner. Up with the sun, we picked the kids up in the parking lot at Canyon and headed to Grassy Lake Road. Drove a bumpy hour or so down the road and began our hike to Union Falls. My journal says it's about a 10 mile out-back hike. The kicker is, it's one of those where you hike mostly DOWN on the way there, so you have to hike mostly UP on the way back.

We sort of took our time, stopping to look at trees, flowers, birds, whatever along the way. Took a couple of snack breaks, you know the drill :-)

When we were almost to the falls, we came upon this cute little Ranger station. There were two rangers here. They asked us not to leave our packs unattended at the area above the falls and to be careful if we decided to go down and get in the water. They mentioned a swimming area along a side trail if we really wanted to swim - which we didn't.

This photo was actually taken on the way back from the falls, after the rangers had saddled up and ridden off.
